Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

The Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Program is rooted in the belief that women and girls must be empowered not only as beneficiaries but as active agents in the fight against climate change. Given their close interaction with natural resources and roles in agriculture, water collection, and energy use, women are both highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and uniquely positioned to lead in community-based solutions.

Purpose and Focus:

This program aims to:
  • Build awareness among women and girls about the causes and consequences of climate change.
  • Promote behavior change and climate-conscious decision-making in their daily activities.
  • Equip women with tools and knowledge for climate-smart livelihoods and adaptation strategies.
  • Key Program Areas:

    Climate Education and Awareness:

  • AWU conducts community sensitization sessions to raise awareness about how individual and community practices contribute to environmental degradation.
  • Women and girls are educated on the link between gender, environmental sustainability, and long-term community resilience.
  • Climate-Smart Livelihood Training:

  • The program supports the development of eco-friendly social enterprises, ensuring that economic activities such as agriculture, crafts, and manufacturing adopt environmentally sustainable practices.
  • Examples include training in organic farming, upcycling craft materials, energy-efficient cooking methods, and waste reduction in production processes.
  • Mentorship and Leadership in Climate Action:

  • Women are mentored to become community champions for climate adaptation.
  • Local green initiatives led by women are supported and scaled through peer networks and partnerships with environmental agencies.
  • Empowerment Through Green Enterprises:

  • AWU integrates climate resilience into its economic empowerment programs by promoting green enterprises that reduce environmental impact while creating sustainable income.
  • Women are encouraged to adopt renewable energy, agroforestry, and other conservation practices as part of their businesses.
