The Girl Child Education Program is dedicated to ensuring that adolescent girls have equal access to quality education and are supported to stay in school and complete their learning journeys. In a country where many girls face barriers to education due to poverty, early pregnancies, cultural practices, and gender-based discrimination, AWU plays a vital role in promoting inclusive, relevant, and accessible education systems.

In Uganda, adolescent girls are disproportionately affected by challenges such as:

Early and forced marriages

Teenage pregnancies

Gender-based violence

Menstrual health stigma and lack of sanitary products

Household responsibilities that prioritize boys’ education

Poverty, which leads to school dropout or irregular attendance

These challenges contribute to low enrollment, retention, and completion rates among girls—particularly in rural areas.

Program Interventions

To address these barriers, AWU implements a variety of initiatives, including:

Back-to-School Campaigns:

Mobilizing communities to support the education of girls, especially teenage mothers or those who dropped out.

Sensitizing parents, guardians, and local leaders on the importance of girls' education.

Material Surpport:

Providing essential school supplies such as books, uniforms, and sanitary pads.

Assisting with tuition or exam fees where needed to reduce financial burdens.

Mentorship and Guidance:

Offering counseling and mentorship programs to build girls’ confidence and self-esteem.

Connecting girls with positive role models to inspire academic and personal achievement.

Menstrual Health Support in Schools:

Distributing reusable sanitary pads and hygiene kits.

Establishing safe and private spaces in schools for menstrual management.

Training girls on menstrual hygiene to reduce absenteeism.

Safe Learning Environments:

Advocating for gender-sensitive infrastructure (e.g., separate latrines).

Supporting schools to implement policies against sexual harassment and bullying.

Community Engagement:

Engaging with parents, teachers, and local government to build supportive environments for girls' education.

Challenging cultural norms that hinder girls’ learning through dialogues and sensitization sessions.
